Slotherhouse: a scary movie about a killer sloth? We’ve got a sense of slow, creeping dread

Sloth turns slayer and terrorises a sorority house

Horror fans have been treated to a barrage of beastly creatures of late.

There was Cocaine Bear, the terrifying story of a bear that devours a load of cocaine and goes on a rampage; Winnie The Pooh’s transformation as an axe-wielding killer; Idris Elba’s Beast, where a lion decides to wreak revenge on mankind; and Wreck, a BBC horror-comedy about a killer duck.

But nothing could have prepared audiences for this next inspired transformation: the sloth, one of the slowest mammals on earth, will now become a psychotic killer in a new film, Slotherhouse.

The trailer, which was released yesterday, shows a group of young women who live together in a kind of sorority house being slowly picked off one by one by the sloth, which has been taken in by one of the girls who mistakenly thought it was a cute and friendly creature. Let this be a warning to all.

In the trailer, the sloth is hiding in a shower and lunges at one of the girls while holding her pink sponge. In another scene, the sloth frowns while camouflaging among the girls’ soft toys.

“In the jungle she’s a beta,” says someone in the trailer about the unlikely slayer. “But out here.... she’s an alpha...”

Viewers have been amused by the sloth’s menacing turn: “A killer sloth… .that’s hilarious, can’t wait to see it,” commented one viewer on the trailer. “It would have been way funnier if she was dragged away really really slowly...” joked another.

Fans shared their reactions to the one minute clip across the internet. “I know nothing about this flick, but Slotherhouse might be the greatest movie title ever,” said a fan on Twitter.

Others were less impressed: “Whoever okayed this horror movie about a killer sloth called “Slotherhouse” deserves to be fired,” said a viewer. “I legit thought this was a SNL skit at first,” said a third.

The film is directed by Matthew Goodhue, whose credits include horror-mystery Woe (2021) and the horror short Dames (2018). Slotherhouse is written by Bradley Fowler, who previously worked on Novel Love (2022) and The Voices (2020).

The cast includes Lisa Ambalavanar (Titans), Sydney Craven (EastEnders), Olivia Rouyre (American Horror Stories), Bianca Beckles-Rose (You Should Know Better) and Andrew Horton (Jupiter’s Legacy).

The UK release date for Slotherhouse is still to be announced
