A big-screen version of The Simpsons is under way and could be in cinemas within two years.

The Simpsons' creators Matt Groening and James L Brooks have taken charge of a writing team to create the extended script.

News of the film leaked after co-producer Mike Reiss said: "It's been 13 years of wanting to do The Simpsons Movie. We've got a very good and interesting idea and it's different from the show."

The programmes featuring Bart, Homer, Marge, Maggie and Lisa have earned $1billion for Fox.
