Revenge tragedy

Some panache: Gillian Anderson
10 April 2012

Gillian Anderson and Danny Dyer star in this British revenge thriller from first-time writer-director Dan Reed, previously noted for his documentaries.

She plays Alice, an older woman who invites Adam (Dyer), her bit of rough trade, to a lavish party in the country, seduces him in the garden and then, on the way home in the Lexus, falls foul of a brutal gang.

He is badly beaten and she is raped. It isn't long before she plans revenge, carrying Adam along with her.

Straightheads, which looks as if it has been cut, still remains a stylish effort and is acted out with some panache too.

But its mixture of sex, violence and a determination to shock gets more and more like parody as it progresses.
