The Princess Diaries fans rejoice – Mia Thermopolis and Queen Clarisse Renaldi could be set to return to our screens as a third film is said to be in the works.

The Hollywood Reporter says The Princess Diaries 3 is in development at Disney. It is said to be a sequel to The Princess Diaries 2, which was released in 2004, rather than a reboot of the original 2001 film.

The Princess Diaries stars Anne Hathaway as teenager Thermopolis, who is told by her estranged grandmother Julie Andrews that she is heir to the throne of a small European country called Genovia.

The first two movies were global hits, making $165 million and $134 million respectively. They remain iconic early-noughties movies.

Now with fans of the films all grown up, what can we expect from the third installment?

Who’s involved in The Princess Diaries 3?

The script for the new film is being written by Aadrita Mukerji, whose credits include Reacher, Supergirl, and Scorpion.

The Princess Diaries producer Debra Martin Chase is reported to be involved, as is Melissa Stack. She was the screenwriter behind the Cameron Diaz-led film, The Other Woman.

Would Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews return for The Princess Diaries 3?

Before fans get too excited at the prospect of The Princess Diaries 3, they should be aware that neither Hathaway nor Andrews have been reported to have signed a deal yet.

And one star may be more reluctant to return to Genovia than the other.

When Andrews was asked if she would like to revisit the film, she told the Hollywood Reporter in June: “I think it would be too late to do it now.

“There was talk of a sequel many, many years ago. But I don’t think it ever came to pass. And [the late director] Garry [Marshall] then did leave us.

“[For] especially me, it’s too far down the line now to go back to it. It’s a lovely thought, but I don’t think it would probably be possible.”

Hathaway is more eager to reprise her role, but on condition that Andrews would be involved.

She told ET in October: "I would more than entertain it, I’m pulling for it.

"If there’s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work. We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen."
