Obsession stripped bare

10 April 2012

The new German cinema continues to impress.

After The Lives of Others comes Valeska Grisebach's almost minimalist story of a part-time fireman (Andreas Müller) who, though deeply in love with his wife, meets a waitress on a training weekend and, after a boozy evening, finds himself in bed with her.

He has no idea how he got there, but realises he is obsessed.

Can anyone love two people at once? Grisebach suggests it is indeed possible, though the fireman is predictably guilt-ridden.

Longing is simplicity itself - but because it seems so truthful and sincere it has more subtlety than most.

A highly impressive feature.
