Sir Ian McKellen is the latest actor to step into the iconic shoes of Sherlock Holmes, following in the recent footsteps of Benedict Cumberbatch and Robert Downey Junior.

Ahead of this week’s release of Mr Holmes, a brand new interactive map has been released, marking the key London locations linked to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s world.

Holmes’ London is both real and imaginary, his well-known home a fictional address – 221B – on the real-life Baker Street.

Hansom cabs carry Holmes and cohort Dr Watson from the West End to the suburbs, travelling to the outer-reaches of the city.

The new map shows Sherlock fans just where than can go in modern-day London to walk in the footsteps of the 19th century detective.

From The Lyceum Theatre, to Simpsons-in-the-Strand, to Scotland Yard, well-known locations map out the life of the fictional sleuth.

McKellan’s latest incarnation shows Holmes in the latter years of his life, having left London and moved to the Dover coast in his retirement, before flashing back to him in his crime-solving heyday.

Mr Holmes is in cinemas nationwide on June 19.
