Netflix has finally shared the trailer for its forthcoming thriller Luckiest Girl Alive.

The highly anticipated film will star Mila Kunis as Ani Fanelli, a 28-year-old who seems to have it all worked out. She’s an editor at a magazine in New York and has a gorgeous fiancé (played by Deep Water’s Finn Wittrock) from a wealthy family. But she has had a difficult past and now it’s starting to seep into her seemingly perfect life.

In the trailer, we flash between two versions of Ani. There’s Kunis as the adult, schmoozing in New York bars, sitting behind a gigantic wooden desk in a skyscraper, and wandering around what looks like a Hampton garden where everyone is wearing svelt suits and sitting in white wicker armchairs.

Then there’s Chiara Aurelia (Cruel Summer) playing the adolescent versioin. She’s pale and distressed, in some scenes crying. She’s at a school, glancing about, paranoid about something. In another scene, she’s being thrown onto a bed, and in another, she’s hugging a man in a supermarket aisle.

As the two-minute video reaches its denouement we start to see Ani’s adult life being disrupted by her memories. She shouts at her fiancé, there’s an explosion, and then there’s a couple of clips of Kunis looking extremely serious, eyes darting around. What is going on?

The film is based on Jessica Knoll’s 2015 New York Times bestselling novel of the same name. Lionsgate picked up the film rights back in 2015, with Reese Witherspoon’s production company Pacific Standard (which is now a subsidiary of Hello Sunshine) on board to produce. Pacific Standard also produced David Fincher’s screen adaption of Gone Girl and the recently released Where the Crawdads Sing from director Olivia Newman, so they know how to whip up a thriller.

Joining Kunis on screen is Scoot McNairy (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), Golden Globe Award-nominated Jennifer Beals (Flashdance) and Connie Britton, who returns doing what she does best as a WASP-y Mum figure (last time it was in The White Lotus).

This is Kunis’s first film of the year. The actor, who has starred in some of Hollywood’s biggest films (including Black Swan and Ted) found fame playing Jackie Burkhart in That ‘70s Show. She will be returning to the house in the forthcoming Netflix reboot That ‘90s Show alongside her husband and sitcom co-star Ashton Kutcher.

“It was really nostalgic to be back on the set. It’s all the same folks that made That ’70s Show, so it was pretty bizarre,” Kutcher told Variety in July.

“Mila and I were contemplating it. We thought, ‘Listen, we’re only in the position that we’re in because of that show, so let’s just go back and do this.’ We just went back and had fun for a week. It was so random and fun.”

Luckiest Girl Alive will be released on Netflix on October 7
