Lots of letters in Dear John

10 April 2012

An adaptation of Nicholas Sparks's best-selling novel ("a form of mass-market deep-tissue massage", according to one critic), Dear John stars Channing Tatum as a soldier on leave in Carolina falling hopelessly for a rich girl (Amanda Seyfried).

As soldier John ponders whether to leave the army for her, 9/11 comes along and he decides to sign up for the military for good. While he is away, she marries a nice man (Henry Thomas) who has an autistic son to look after, but the GI can't forget her, nor her him. A lot of letters are exchanged, Tatum makes what use he can of his two expressions, Seyfried does her best to perk things up and much the best performer is Richard Jenkins as the soldier's eccentric father.
