London Film Festival Awards: Certain Women takes the top prize

The awards have been announced as part of the 60th annual BFI London Film Festival

Certain Women, a film about the lives of three very different women in Montana, has scooped the top prize at the London Film Festival Awards, which were announced at an industry event in Whitehall’s Banqueting House.

The film was directed by Kelly Reichardt, who was presented with the Best Film award by president of the official competition jury, Athina Rachel Tsangari, whose film Chevalier won the prize last year.

The awards were held as the finale of the 60th annual BFI London Film Festival.

The prize for First Feature went to director Julia Ducournau for Raw, which is playful coming-of-age film about a young woman’s insatiable appetite for flesh.

The winner of the Documentary award was Starless Dreams directed, produced and written by Mehrdad Oskouei. The film is a thoughtful and complex portrait of juvenile delinquent women at the extreme margins of Iranian society.

The prize for Best Short Film went to 9 days – From my Window in Aleppo, directed by Issa Touma, Thomas Vroege and Floor van de Muelen.

Finally, and as previously announced, Steve McQueen was awarded the BFI Fellowship. The Oscar-winning filmmaker was presented his award by his frequent collaborator Michael Fassbender.
