Films shot in London and about city life will be put centre-stage at the 14th East London Film Festival opening on Wednesday.

The 12-day festival, which launches with One Crazy Thing starring Ray Panthaki and Daisy Bevan, includes two London-set thrillers in Good People, starring Kate Hudson and James Franco, and Still, with Aidan Gillen — who will appear for a Q&A.

Films shot in the East End include Panic, about an agoraphobic music journalist, Mle, a true-life spy story, and the Austrian movie Where I Belong which uses locations such as Mile End’s Palm Tree pub to tell the story of a woman who moves to England to escape the Nazis.

A documentary strand also puts the East End in focus. Estate, A Reverie explores “the death of a utopian dream” in the story of Hackney’s post-war Haggerston council estate, which was eventually demolished after nearly 70 years.

But the programme does stretch further afield with movies from Palestine to the Netherlands including Lee Scratch Perry’s Vision Of Paradise about the Jamaican reggae star, and a number of films probing the issue of race in America.

The festival runs from Wednesday until July 12. eastendfilmfestival.com
