Like Father

10 April 2012

Like Father follows three generations of men in an East Durham mining family, with more subtlety than glossier efforts such as Brassed Off.

Arthur Elliott (Ned Kelly) and his ageing friends stand to lose their allotment to big business.

His estranged son Joe (Joe Armstrong) has made the transition from mining to music but hasn't changed his men's club attitude enough to prevent his marriage crumbling. And ten-year-old Michael (Jonathon Dent) sees his father's and grandfather's authority crumbling while fighting his own, corresponding battles against cruel schoolchildren.

Although it drags occasionally, this is an informed and well-acted depiction of the complexities of life lived by obsolete codes.
