Licence to be ghastly

Licence to Wed: Robin Williams makes an awful priest
10 April 2012

Every now and again, sympathetic people ask me what's the worst film I've seen so far this year. Now I have an answer for them: it's this ghastly Robin Williams romantic comedy.

Williams plays the Reverend Frank, who has been photographed with the Pope, Bill Clinton and George Bush but is about to lower himself to marry the very ordinary Ben (John Krasinski) and Sue (Mandy Moore). But first he sets them various tasks to prove their undying love for each other. Which, of course, they mostly fail until the gooey feelgood ending.

Williams, who has latterly been much better at kooky, semi-serious roles, gives a wincingly awful performance as the interfering priest. The amorphous couple go through the hoops he sets them as if trying to get out of Ken Kwapis's limp comedy.
