Jackboots on Whitehall can't make up its mind

10 April 2012

Edward and Rory McHenry’s puppet animation is set in an alternate version of Kent, in a world where Goering, Goebbels and Himmler are able to arrive in London and occupy Buckingham Palace.

Adorned by a distinguished voice cast, it is a comedy that suggests that both Brits and Nazis equal each other in serial dottiness. Churchill (Timothy Spall) heads with his Kentish yeomen towards Hadrian’s Wall, using a steam traction engine for transport. Hitler (Alan Cumming) appears in drag at the Palace. All seems lost.

But the situation is saved by an army of ancient Celts who storm into battle like Mel Gibson on drugs. Ewan McGregor, Richard E Grant, Rosamund Pike and Dominic West are among the alumni who voice the plasticine models.

Despite their efforts, however, the film never makes up its mind whether it’s parody or satire.
