In a class of their own

10 April 2012

The intention behind Nicolas Philibert's documentary is modest: to record an academic year in the lives of a dozen young children taught by one teacher at a school in rural France.

It proves that with the right dedicative approach, clarity of observation and ego avoidance, it is possible to come up with a small, but perfectly formed, masterpiece.

Philibert's qualities mirror those of teacher Georges Lopez to an uncanny degree. Like the teacher, he has infinite reserves of patience; he watches, listens and waits. From the opening sequence of an inhospitable, snowswept Auvergne landscape followed by a shot of two tortoises propelling themselves across an empty classroom, the film is utterly compelling. The children, aged between four and 10, assemble, Lopez takes charge and the viewer is hooked.

The pupils' characters emerge quickly and with breathtaking naturalism - the lack of condescension by teacher and film-maker is crucial. We share the progress of the class, commiserate with failure and cheer triumph.

There is a palpable sense of loss at the end of the year when Lopez bids farewell to his charges and prepares for retirement. Rarely has nature and nurture been so beautifully explored - not as rivals but collaborators in the development of the young mind, body and soul. Amazing man, amazing film. - NN
