Doomed lovers: Gary Oldman and Alfred Molina
10 April 2012

Stephen Frears's 1987 film tells the story of playwright Joe Orton and Kenneth Halliwell, the longtime lover who crushed Orton's skull with a hammer before downing two handfuls of Nembutal to take his own life.

They may not be precisely cast, but Gary Oldman as the gay, untrustworthy writer and Alfred Molina as Halliwell still give superb performances.

Vanessa Redgrave as the celebrated agent Peggy Ramsay and Wallace Shawn as biographer John Lahr are not far behind.
