The new Wallace and Gromit DVD could become the fastest-selling British film in history, according to early sales figures.

The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit was released yesterday and was flying off the shelves at the rate of one copy per second in Tesco stores.

The chain sold out yesterday's quota before 11am and had to re-stock shelves with today's supply to meet demand. 'We always knew it was going to be extremely popular but the demand has exceeded all expectations,' said Charlotte Delaney, the retailer's chief DVD buyer.

The animated feature was named outstanding British film of the year at Sunday night's Baftas - the first time an animation has featured in the category. Yesterday morning, a giant inflatable model of Gromit was positioned in Trafalgar Square to promote the DVD launch.
