God Bless America - review

Despite being glaringly implausible, few film-makers would dare to say what Bobcat Goldthwait says in this violent, disturbing and funny movie

If America really is going to hell, then Bobcat Goldthwait is surely its bitterest chronicler.

There has seldom been a movie that hits the nail on the head quite so thoroughly. Nor none that sometimes misses its mark like a drunken archer.

Frank (Joel Murray) is overweight, jobless and terminally ill — and he always sees the dark side. When he meets teenager Roxy (Tara Lynne Barr), who also hates everything, he decides to go on a killing spree. He has a revolver. She has a rifle.

Their first victim is Maddie Hasson’s high-school diva, who runs a ghastly reality show. The pair then go on a triumphant run across America (where there are apparently no following police).

There’s a bloody attack in a cinema when other yobbish customers disturb them, and a finale at another reality show that has to be seen to be believed.

All the while, Frank and Roxy (two amazing performances) grow fonder of each other — once Roxy gets over her fury at Frank’s refusal to paw her. Goldthwait’s film is violent, disturbing but also funny. Frank, after all, aims his gun at morons we’d all like to take down. Implausible? Yes. But not many film-makers would dare to say what this one says, loud and clear.
