Oscars 2023: the nominations are out! Here’s the full list

Jaws dropped as Women Talking was nominated for Best Picture

The 2023 Oscar nominations have been announced and – drumroll – there are a few surprises on the list.

The announcement presentation, which was hosted by actors Riz Ahmed and Allison Williams, was live streamed from Beverly Hills today at 1.30 pm GMT, which is an eye-watering 5.30am in California.

Runaway hit Everything Everywhere All At Once leads the nominations with 11, including two for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, for Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu, Best Actress for Michelle Yeo, Best Picture, and Best Director for Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. Ke Hey Quan takes a nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, making this almost certainly the year with the most Oscar nominations for South East Asian actors ever.

All Quiet on the Western Front and The Banshees of Inisherin tie with nine nominations each, with both up for Best Picture and All Quiet featuring on the list for Best International Feature Film. British-Irish multi-hyphenate Martin McDonagh gets the Best Director nod for Banshees, while the film’s actors dominated with a Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Kerry Condon, Best Actor in a Supporting Role for both Barry Keoghan and Brendan Gleeson, and Best Actor for Colin Farrell.

It’s a good day for talent across the water, with Paul Mescal also getting nominated for Best Actor for his role in Aftersun, The Quiet Girl appearing in the Best International Feature category, and An Irish Goodbye, set in rural Northern Ireland, up for Best Live Action Short Film.

British acting talent was recognised elsewhere too, with Bill Nighy getting the nod for Best Actor for Living and Andrea Riseborough receiving a nomination for Best Actress for her role in To Leslie.

With her nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Angela Bassett receives the first acting nomination for a Marvel film – the superhero blockbuster boasts four nominations, also including Best Costume Design. Darren Aronofsky’s lauded film The Whale didn’t trouble the voters as much as expected, but did come away with a nomination for Best Actor for its star Brendan Fraser and a Best Actress in a Supporting Role nod for Hong Chau.

It’s not a bumper year for women, there are none named in the Best Director category, and Canadian director Sarah Polley is the only one who features among those helming the nominees for Best Picture, with Women Talking, which she also wrote with Mirian Toews. The film is also up for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical The Fabelmans comes away with seven nominations, including Best Picture and a Best Actress nod for Michelle Williams, but was just pipped by Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, whose eight nominations also include one for Best Picture.

Blockbusters Top Gun Maverick and Avatar: The Way of Water also feature in the Best Picture category.
