Floating Skyscrapers - film review

Tomasz Wasilewski's tragic drama film sees star swimmer Kuba (Mateusz Banasuk) find his relationship with his girlfriend and mother under threat when he falls for another man
6 December 2013

In which Polish director Tomasz Wasilewski takes forever to say very little. A star swimmer, Kuba (Mateusz Banasuk) with a girlfriend (Marta Nieradkiewicz), suddenly finds himself attracted to another man, pretty Michal (Bartosz Gelner). The listless girlfriend doesn't like this development. Nor does the swimmer's sexy, pushy mum (Katarzyna Herman). Nor do the homophobic guys who live on Kuba's estate.

The sternly elegant camera set-ups make Warsaw look very uninviting (only when Kuba and Michal are entwined, or in water, does anything like delight bubble to the surface). Tragedy's in the air. I found it hard to care. Still, the bit where the title gets explained is sweet.
