A Chicken Run sequel is coming to Netflix, more than 20 years after the original animation arrived in cinemas.

The stop-motion comedy — which starred Julia Sawalha, Mel Gibson, Imelda Staunton and others — told the story of a group of plucky chickens desperate to escape their farm.

The long-awaited follow-up was announced in 2018, but has now been confirmed by Netflix, although the streaming platform did not say when it was set to be released. Production is “expected to begin next year”.

Aardman Animations, which produced the first film and is otherwise known for its plasticine characters Wallace and Gromit, will return to helm the sequel.

Sam Fell will take the director’s chair, following on from his work on animations such as The Tale of Despereaux (2008) and ParaNorman (2012).

It has not been confirmed whether any of the original cast members have been enlisted for the sequel.

Chicken Run arrived in 2000 and generated more than $224m (£179m) at the box office, making it the highest-grossing stop motion animated film of all time.
