An original, gut-wrenching indie romance that — if it were a little less clumsy — could have been a classic. Director/writer Felix Van Groeningen introduces us to Didier (Johan Heldenbergh) and Elise (Veerle Baetens), a left-field Flemish couple who discover a shared passion for bluegrass music. Grief rips through their life but, via music, new rituals make sense of tragedy. Broken Circle Breakdown is Belgium’s 2014 Oscar entry; it would be awful unlikely, and awful nice, if it won.
