Black stars honoured at film awards

10 April 2012

Hollywood stars were honoured at the first ever Black Filmmakers Film and Television Awards in London last night - but failed to collect their awards.

Angela Bassett won the female screen personality award, Jackie Brown star Pam Grier won a lifetime achievement award and Denzel Washington took the best male screen personality award.

All three awards were accepted by Eriq La Salle, the black American actor in ER.

Despite the non-appearances, BFM Awards chiefs said the event would become an 'exciting, glamorous and sexy' annual fixture.

Diane Parish, who played detective Eva Sharpe in The Bill, was there to collect the best female personality in TV prize.

BBC children's TV host Angelica Bell was named best presenter while Marsha Thomason won best female performance in a film for her work in Black Knight.

British actor Eammon Walker took the best male performance on TV award for ITV's Othello. Lennie James, who played Sol in Snatch, took the award for best male performance in a movie.
