The best new film releases to watch in London cinemas this September

2019 is already shaping up to be one of the biggest for film in recent years – with Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon A Time In Hollywood proving the latest cinematic success story.

In September, there’s a return for one of the biggest horror releases in recent times, as well as a big screen adaptation of one of British TV's best-loved series.

Elsewhere, a literary phenomenon is also being transformed for the big screen, and there’s a blockbuster ensemble drama featuring J-Lo and Cardi B heading our way too.

These are the top five films to catch in London cinemas this September.

It: Chapter Two – September 6

Pennywise is back, 27 years after the events of the first movie, to haunt the residents of Derry all over again. Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy and Bill Hader lead a killer cast, in what is shaping up to be one of the scariest blockbusters of the summer. Get on board, and you’ll float too.

Downton Abbey – September 13

The popular period drama is getting a big-screen adaptation, and the Crawleys are expecting special guests. The King and Queen are visiting, and it’s all hands on deck to get the preparations completed in time. Cast members Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Maggie Smith and Jim Carter all return, and while it may sound a little twee, it should be royally good fun.

Hustlers – September 13

Based on the fascinating true story of a group of strippers and exotic dancers who stole from their wealthy banker clients following the financial crash of 2008, Hustlers features one of the most star-studded ensemble casts of the year. The likes of Jennifer Lopez, Cardi B, Julia Stiles, Keke Palmer, Lizzo, Constance Wu and Usher all make appearances in the crime thriller, which could take pole position in the box office this month.

Ad Astra – September 20

A world-renowned astronaut Major Roy McBride (Brad Pitt) flies into outer space in order to track down his long-lost father (Tommy Lee Jones) in this epic drama from director James Gray (The Lost City of Z). It’s one of the most ambitious sci-fi flicks of the year, and another major release for Pitt following his critically acclaimed performance in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. Tommy Lee Jones, Donald Sutherland, Ruth Negga and Liv Tyler also star.

The Goldfinch – September 27

This upcoming drama is an adaptation of the best-selling novel by Donna Tartt, which became a literary sensation back in 2013. The story focuses on a young boy who loses his mother following a terrorist attack at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. A host of famous names are involved, including Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard, Suits star Sarah Paulson, Luke Wilson, Jefrey Wright and Nicole Kidman. Director John Crowley (Brooklyn and Boy A) is at the helm.
