Anna Friel and Steve Coogan have been transported back to the days when Soho was the epitome of seedy glamour in a new film about porn king Paul Raymond.

In these first shots from the set of King of Soho, Coogan plays Raymond, ruler of the red-light district, in the comedy-drama about the colourful life of the renowned club proprietor and porn publisher.

Friel plays Jean Bradley, to whom he was married for more than 20 years until 1974, when he took up with glamour model Fiona Richmond, played by Tamsin Egerton.

The shots show an apparent inconsistency as Friel is pictured with a billboard from the short-lived London Daily News which published for only a few months in 1987.

But a spokeswoman said the film covered the whole of Raymond’s career, which ended at the age of 82 in 2008. It is directed by Michael Winterbottom and written by Matt Greenhalgh, who scripted the films Nowhere Boy and Control.
