Emin wallets to be handed out for free

Commuters can now own a pocket-sized artwork by Tracey Emin.

The Turner Prize nominee, most famous for her unmade bed, has designed a travel wallet to mark the 60th anniversary of Arts Council England.

It is a drawing of her cat, Docket, with the caption: "We've got fur and lots of ears. Love Tracey Emin."

The wallets - to be used for Oyster cards, train and bus passes - will be distributed in cities around the country.

The Art In Your Hand project follows a recent Arts Council collaboration with Sainsbury's, in which artists designed reusable carrier bags.

Emin said: "I actually have an Oyster card, but I really don't like the wallet, so I thought it would be good fun to make something I like. Travel can be cute. And it's good to celebrate 60 years of the Arts Council."

Novelist Jeanette Winterson, author of Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit, has created a wallet featuring a romantic short story based in a railway station.

Other artists who have contributed include Adam Sutherland, Jyll Bradley, Tim Etchells and contemporary dancer Michael Clark.

All the wallets are designed around the theme of travel. The project aims to bring art into daily life by customising everyday objects.

The wallets will be handed out in the following places:

March 19 - London Paddington (rail station), Manchester Piccadilly (rail station)
March 20 - London (street distribution), Newcastle (street distribution)
March 21 - Cambridge (street distribution), Leicester (street distribution)
March 22 - Brighton (street distribution), Birmingham New Street (rail station)
March 23 - Leeds (rail station)
March 24 - Bristol (Broadmead shopping centre)
