A bold castle-style pavilion is expected to be installed in the grounds of Dulwich Picture Gallery.

The Colour Palace was selected by a panel of experts to become this year’s summer pavilion at Sir John Soane’s Grade II-listed gallery in south London.

The temporary structure, which beat 150 other entrants, has been designed by Peckham architecture practice PriceGore and London-based Nigerian artist Yinka Ilori.

It is said to be a fusion of European and African cultures and includes a multi-coloured, geometric exterior, which is inspired by the Dutch textile prints found in the markets of Lagos in Nigeria.

It is also intended to represent multicultural London, including Peckham Rye, which has a large Nigerian population.

Dulwich Picture Gallery has applied to Southwark council for permission to temporarily install the pavilion. If plans are approved tonight, it will be unveiled during the London Festival of Architecture in June and will host outdoor performances, talks and events during the three-month festival.

Dingle Price, who runs PriceGore with Alex Gore, said: “Despite its temporary nature, it is a fantastic opportunity for us to design a prominent and celebratory civic building that will enrich the cultural offer of the Dulwich Picture Gallery.”

Jennifer Scott, the Sackler Director of Dulwich Picture Gallery, added: “This innovative, colourful space will act as a beacon of creativity and inclusion for visitors of all ages and backgrounds.”

The biennial competition began in 2017, when design practice IF_DO constructed a pavilion made partly from mirrored screens to mark the gallery’s 200th anniversary.
