Danielle Walker review: Entertaining debut hints there's more to come

Beating around the bush: Australian comic Danielle Walker
Bruce Dessau25 January 2019

Australia’s Danielle Walker bagged the Best Newcomer Award at the 2018 Melbourne International Comedy Festival and arrives in Soho with a bit of a buzz. Her show, Bush Rat, certainly has its fair share of laughs, but is slighter than expected.

The title comes from the nickname the 26-year-old’s grandfather gave her because she was always disappearing into the bush when she was growing up in North Queensland. She was maybe more adventurous back then than here where she mostly plays it safe.

Grandad, who, she explains, has already dug his own grave to be buried near his pets, features in the set, as do various other family members. At times, as the giggly stand-up runs through their oddball traits, it sounds as if she is pitching characters for a sitcom. They definitely exude humorous potential though. Dad never removes his sunglasses, Mum is worried about removing her body hair.

When not discussing genealogy, Walker frequently turns her attention to animals. A running gag that runs out of steam involves a dismembered pig, while a stronger yarn recalls someone who collected dead frill-necked lizards. Walker does have lots of fun imagining what he does with those frilled necks. This is not particularly hard-hitting, though it does turn marginally serious towards the end when the narrative homes in on a lesser-spotted member of her family.

Walker is confident and skilful but also gentle and unassuming. Bush Rat does feel very much, however, like the full-length debut that it is. There is storytelling talent on display, but this is an initial calling card that entertains without pushing the artistic envelope. One suspects this immensely amiable rising star will deliver something much more substantial in the future.
