He might be called David Cross but David Furious might be more apt right now. The Atlanta-born performer is famous for his quirky humour and playing oddball Tobias Fünke in sitcom Arrested Development, but has clearly been fired up by recent events. In the sarcastically titled Making America Great Again he is angrier than ever.

The unashamed Anglophile warmed up with a few easily digestible quips about dodgy eco-friendly soap and dodgier Devon pubs, and joked that if Leave wins “the pound will plummet and I can afford to move here”.

The reasons he is considering this soon became apparent. He had Donald Trump firmly in his sights, mocking his line “I love the poorly educated” and suggesting that the Republican candidate does not love anything except his own brand.

Cross saved his most Swiftian barbs for the US’s gun control stance. Some want teachers to carry weapons, he noted. So why not arm pupils too? Religion received a tongue-lashing too. While Stewart Lee has worked with similar material in the past, this craftsman added new ideas.

There were moments where it felt that he was pushing boundaries for his own amusement. References to Isis and domestic violence were uncomfortable rather than edgy. But elsewhere this was thrillingly funny. Audacious, intelligent, pertinent and not for the faint-hearted.
