A “beautiful book” about a little Yak desperate to grow up has won the prestigious £10,000 Oscar’s Book Prize.

The Littlest Yak by writer Lu Fraser and illustrator Kate Hindley was announced as the winner by the prize’s patron Princess Beatrice.

She said: “This is a beautiful book, and the winners should be so proud of everything they’ve achieved in pulling together this beautiful story”.

The story follows Gertie, the smallest Yak in the herd, in a rhyming caper as she discovers that being big is not always best.

Fraser said: “This story means a huge amount to me, I put my heart into it as it felt like a really important message to remind children, and grown-ups, that we all have bigness inside.”

Hindley added: “Cheers to Lu for writing such a brilliant debut text. It was such a pleasure to illustrate.

“I’m absolutely delighted and flabbergasted to hear our wee Gertie has won Oscar’s Book Prize. Thank you very, very much.”

The annual prize for the best children’s picture book is now in its eighth year and is supported by Amazon, the National Literacy Trust and the Evening Standard.

It is awarded in memory of Oscar Ashton, who died aged three-and-a-half of an undetected heart condition in 2012.

Oscar’s mother, and co-founder of the prize, Viveka Alvestrand, said: “This is a fabulous book about it being ok to be who you are. It’s a wonderful book to explore together because there are lots of things going on every page; the art and the words work so well together, and it flows really nicely.”
