Paperback: The Dirtiest Race in History by Richard Moore (Bloomsbury, £8.99)

The murky story of the 100m final at the 1988 Seoul Olympics is beautifully told, says William Leith

At the start of this book is a photograph of four men. The date is September 24, 1988. The four men are Ben Johnson, Calvin Smith, Linford Christie and Carl Lewis.

The picture captures the moment just after the pistol has been fired at the start of the 100m final at the Seoul Olympics. The four men are surging forward. At the end of the book: the same four men, less than 10 seconds later. Johnson looks triumphant. The others look stretched and pained. Then Johnson was disqualified. This is the story, beautifully told, of what happened before and after those pictures were taken. Very murky.
