Paperback: Back to Blood by Tom Wolfe (Vintage, £8.99)

William Leith27 June 2013

Miami, the present day. Nestor Camacho is a cop of Cuban origin. He’s really American but his fellow cops see him as Cuban. There’s tension. Nestor has, or thinks he has, a gorgeous girlfriend. One day he rescues a Cuban at the top of a ship’s mast. It’s a heroic act but that’s not how the Cuban community sees it. They see him as a cop thwarting an attempt to make a landing on American soil. They see him as a traitor. His family snubs him, even his grandmother... Nestor is crushed. Then his girlfriend dumps him for a slick sex-addiction expert. Meanwhile, WASP Ed Topping 1V, the newspaper editor, plots and schemes. Classic Wolfe. A delight.
