Paperback: A Possible Life by Sebastian Faulks (Vintage, £7.99)

William Leith5 September 2013

Faulks experiments here; it’s mesmerising. You know these stories are connected. But how? That’s the mystery, and it keeps you reading. A very English chap called Geoffrey becomes an undercover agent in the Second World War; in a terrifying situation, he thinks of cricket. He’s better at dealing with war, it seems, than peace. In another story, a Victorian boy in London graduates from the workhouse and forges a life: after the woman who is the love of his life falls ill, something strange happens. In a third, a scientist called Elena makes an important discovery about the human brain. Each story, beautifully told in itself, deepens your sense of the others.
