Trouble ahead: President Maduro casts his vote in last Sunday’s assembly election
3 August 2017

Whatever the rights and wrongs of the situation in Venezuela, street violence aimed at overthrowing a democratically elected leader is not justified.

The opposition have bombed soldiers in the street, launched a grenade attack from a helicopter on the supreme court and also launched an armed attack on a hospital. They have virtually called for a military coup, which nearly happened several years ago and has happened in Chile and other South American countries with terrible consequences.

The collusion of Western governments, by their silence and more active means, is an outrage.
Brendan O’Brien

Boris Johnson has called on Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro to release political prisoners as the civil unrest there rumbles on.
