For adrenaline junkies with more exotic taste in destinations, activity adventurers Exodus (020 8675 5550) can arrange special breaks for families with fit-and-able teenagers (18 upwards), such as a four-day Wet and Wild break in Spain's Picos mountains, from £499pp, or an eight-day Corsican Caper adventure, from £920pp.

Regal Diving (01353 778 096) has deals for aqua kids at a trio of Red Sea scuba schools in Sharm el Sheikh, Hurghada and Nuweiba, with a five-day PADI Open Water course for over-10s. Adults from £559 a week, children from £259 (including flights/full board); PADI £165 (including equipment). Non-diving activities available.

Alpine action specialist VFB Holidays France Active (01242 240 300) specialises in Continental crazes for over-12s, for instance via ferrata (cliff-climbing) or grass-slope racing in Alpine "devalkarts", as well as paragliding and summer tobogganing. A week from £223 per adult, children from £45 (self-drive, self-catering), including ferries, not activities, which are individually priced from £5-£35 each. Scottish water adventurers Caledonian Discovery (01397 772 167), meanwhile, combine a crewed barge cruise on Highland waterways with activities including waterskiing, mountain biking and orienteering. From £349 for a week all inclusive.
