Tech behemoth Amazon is extending its return to office date guidance to early 2022, in a move that will potentially apply to thousands of its staff in London.

Earlier this year the e-commerce group said going forward it was looking to offer employees a mix of home and office working, with three days at Amazon sites in many cases for corporate roles.

It had been anticipated that employees would begin coming in regularly from the week beginning September 7.

Amazon has now said: “As we continue to closely watch local conditions related to Covid-19, we are adjusting our guidance for corporate employees in the US and other countries where we had previously anticipated that employees would begin coming in regularly [next month].”

It is extending the date to January 3 next year. The company added that the return-to-office timeline will vary globally in accordance with local conditions.

The extension applies to office workers in the UK, although staff can come into workplaces if they need or want to for their jobs.

Amazon does not break down how many of its 45,000 employees in the UK are in office-based roles, but it has corporate offices in Manchester and London. Its Shoreditch HQ has capacity for about 5,000 staff.

Numerous businesses are looking at post-pandemic office plans, with many set to embrace a hybrid working model.
