Slump-hit Game feels the pain from supermarkets

11 April 2012

Computer game retailer Game Group today reported a dramatic slump in sales as it felt the pain of the recession and competition from supermarkets.

The firm said same-store sales in the UK tumbled 16.6% in the 44 weeks to 5 December.

Game, which has 701 stores in the UK and Ireland and 1406 around the world, pinned its hopes on the key Christmas period which usually accounts for a quarter of annual sales.

The company said two new games, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and FIFA 10, both broke records in the their first week. But other games have not sold as well and it has faced competition from supermarkets cutting prices.
