Businesses were today offered the chance to help put Peckham at the heart of the capital’s afro-Caribbean hair and beauty industry in a new palm-tree decorated destination.

Southwark council said it is seeking a company to manage its planned ‘Peckham Palms’ development which it hopes to be a hub for make-up artists, manicurists and hair stylists, as well as other independent traders.

It has just lodged proposals for the project at Bournemouth Close which can accommodate space for about 40 beauty specialists.

Subject to planning permission, it will open in Winter and would be a home for businesses relocating owing to construction works at Peckham Rye Station, as well as new companies that want to open there.

Councillor Mark Williams, Southwark cabinet member for regeneration said: “We want to not only make sure the businesses relocating to Peckham Palms get the full business and marketing support they need to get their customers to move with them, but also to help them grow and for the area to become the number one spot for afro-Caribbean hair and beauty in London.”

Firms invited to bid to run the five-year contract would be responsible for managing the properties and helping to promote the retailers.
