How to save it: Sweet screens, budget couture & cheap calls home

25 September 2012

A fine crop of suggestions from Lucy Tobin, including cut-price entertainment in the cinema (just eat chocolate), the inexpensive way to keep in touch with home while abroad and budget couture

Sweet screens

The cinema is never a cheap night out these days and to see the latest Bond film Skyfall, something akin to a windfall is required. But a few new autumnal deals will at least cut the cost. Cineworld is offering a free cinema ticket if you buy four bags of chocolates — including M&Ms, Minstrels and Maltesers — with a sticker of a film projector on the packet. They’re available across London but Asda is selling the packs for £1 each and at Morrisons they are £1.04. Once you have four bags, you register their codes online at Sweetsundays.co.uk to receive an eVoucher for a cinema ticket to any Sunday film viewing between now and January 13. Elsewhere, Odeon is offering 30% off visits to the movies between Sunday and Thursday each week. Go to http://tinyurl.com/odeoncheaptickets to print off the voucher. It’s valid until Thursday October 18 on any film, including 3D and IMAX viewings. The other decent, ongoing deal (which this voucher can’t be used with), is two-for-one visits to most cinema chains with Orange Wednesdays. If you don’t have an Orange SIM, get a free one at freesim.orange.co.uk.

Simple way to phone home

Anyone wanting to stay in touch while on a long holiday or who has children setting off on a gap year abroad should pick up a local mobile-phone Sim card rather than use a British one to phone home from overseas. They’re usually available locally, but those who want to organise it ahead of time might consider a 15% off deal from Ritesim. Anyone going away for three months or more can receive the discount on pay-as-you-go SIM cards in 45 countries including America, Australia, India and China. Customers can buy pre-loaded call packages or stand-alone SIMs which can be topped up while travelling or online.

How to dress for less

London Fashion Week is over and shoppers might be planning autumnal splurges. Bargain-hunting tips from save.co.uk could help you to (re)fill a wardrobe for less. “Follow your favourite brands on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter to find out first about offers and sales,” it recommends. “Keep on top of websites like samplesaleslondon.co.uk to find out where and when top brands are selling off stock. Have a swishing party with friends where everyone shows up with a few items in good condition they don’t wear any more and no one is allowed to leave with what they brought. Sign up to daily newsletters and discount voucher sites so you don’t miss an offer. And remember, just because an item is on sale doesn’t necessarily make it a bargain. If you never wear it, it’s money wasted, not saved.”
