Discount retailer Poundland is set to temporarily close 44 of its branches due to the latest lockdown.

The chain said certain stores will be placed into “hibernation” from January 9. The vast majority of its remaining sites will remain open.

Poundland is classified as an ‘essential’ retailer here, but high street footfall is set to be weak across the UK this month due to the covid-19 lockdown.

Austin Cooke, Poundland’s retail director, said: “Putting a small number of stores into hibernation helps protect them for the long term and focus our attention on the majority of stores that remain open to serve their neighbourhoods."

Cooke added: “We hope this lockdown is short and we can reopen our hibernating stores as quickly as possible and we remain grateful for the vital support schemes available to us that help protect jobs.”
