Laing O'Rourke wins 'cathedral of science' job

11 April 2012

Building giant Laing O'Rourke was today awarded the £400 million deal to build a new "cathedral of science" at St Pancras, as tipped by the Evening Standard last week.

The UK Centre for Medical Research and Innovation will bring together 1500 scientists under one roof to lead the fight against cancer and heart disease when completed in 2015.

UKCMRI is backed by Medical Research Council, Cancer Research UK, the Wellcome Trust and University College London.

The building's size has sparked local opposition, but the centre has agreed £10 million of enhancements with Camden Borough Council including £1.7 million to improve social housing.
