Labour ‘to demand probe’ of Rupert Murdoch's BSkyB deal

Labour is expected to demand competition regulators investigate News Corporation's plans to buy the 61% of BSkyB it does not already own.

The party has made no comment, but sources indicated today that shadow Culture Secretary Ben Bradshaw will go public soon.

The European Commission is already set to probe News Corp boss Rupert Murdoch's plans. He could face opposition from the competition authorities because of his significant presence in the media industry.

BSkyB has nearly 9.8 million British subscribers and News Corp is the parent company of newspapers such as The Times, The Sunday Times and The Sun. Murdoch's newspapers opposed Labour at the general election.
