Internet betting is a favourite for William Hill

11 April 2012

William Hill was late to the online betting party, but it's got its dancing shoes on now.

In the 13 weeks to March 30, profit at the bookie's online arm rose 51%, new accounts increased 31% and active players rose 15%.

The hope is that the internet offering will offset lower traffic in betting shops.

William Hill, which has 2300 betting shops in Britain and Ireland, saw overall sales up just 1% on last year.

Chief executive Ralph Topping said: "I am satisfied with our performance this early in the year, with an improvement shown in overall retail turnover levels and good growth from William Hill Online in revenues, operating profit and new accounts."
