InterContinental sticks its staff emails onto the cloud

11 April 2012

UK hotels giant InterContinental Hotels Group is switching 25,000 of its employees and hotel managers onto a cloud-based email system managed by Google in place of Microsoft's Outlook.

The move is a rare victory for Google, which has been trying for years to break Microsoft's dominance in the market for corporate software and communication applications.

The new email system will be entirely in the "cloud" - meaning it will be run on servers managed by Google. As well as being a coup for Google, it is a major victory for the whole cloud computing world, which is hoping to win corporate customers.
