London start-ups were given a boost today after Workspace Group was given the go-ahead to build a major office complex for small and medium-sized businesses just a stone’s throw from Canary Wharf.

The developer, which focuses on office space for new and growing businesses, has secured planning permission to redevelop Poplar Business Park, near the site of the new Canary Wharf Crossrail station.

The Docklands site — which at present is focused on light industry — will be transformed into 392 apartments, a 58,000-square-foot business centre and a multitude of workshops.

The £91 million redevelopment, slated to begin by 2015, will also feature two new public squares and improved transport links.

Workspace chief executive Jamie Hopkins said: “We are delighted to have secured planning permission. It is a significant redevelopment in an area that will be experiencing a lot of change over the coming years with the arrival of Crossrail at Canary Wharf. “

Canary Wharf is trying to attract start-ups to the area, particular those from the technology sector, and Canary Wharf Group’s tech “accelerator” space, Level39, recently announced plans to expand because of high demand from start-ups.
