Why Tesco pops its corks in East London

The retailer has upped the number of products it sells tailored to local customers

Champagne-swilling City boys mean Tesco has more fizz flying off its shelves in Canary Wharf than anywhere else in the country, according to research seen by the Evening Standard.

The supermarket giant’s store in the financial centre has the highest champagne sales of any of Tesco’s sites, while it is also popular for sports and nutrition products.

In data showing what products are hits in its stores across the capital, Tesco’s Express store in tourist-jammed Trafalgar Square sells more bottled water than anywhere else.

Meanwhile, its store in Colney Hatch in Barnet takes the number one slot for sales of Tesco’s premium range, Finest.

The supermarket’s other best-sellers include 10-kilo bags of rice to cater for the Asian population in Wembley and Brazilian cheese bread pao de queijo in Surrey Quays, where there is a large Latin American population.

The retailer has upped the number of products it sells tailored to local customers in its 500 London shops.

Tesco boss Philip Clarke has been battling falling sales as it struggles to appeal to shoppers lured by discount rivals Aldi and Lidl. The retailer last month reported a 6% fall in group annual trading profit.

Rival Asda yesterday put more than 4000 jobs at risk as it attempts to cater for a change in the way people shop. Its first-quarter like-for-like sales nudged up 0.1%.
