Toyota is stymied by another recall

18 October 2013

Toyota today announced another major recall, this time of almost one million vehicles over water leaks, which takes the total number of motors it has had to have returned to garages to 20 million in just two years.

The Japanese carmaker’s latest fault affects the Camry, Camry Hybrid, Avalon, Avalon Hybrid, and Venza models made in 2012-13. Water could leak into its airbag control module, causing a short circuit and, in some cases, meaning airbags “could become disabled or could inadvertently deploy” or the power steering function could be disabled, Toyota said.

The latest recall affects about 847,000 cars in North America, with the rest spread around in Europe, Asia and the Middle East on a far smaller scale.

Toyota said there had been no reports of vehicles crashing over this fault, but two minor injuries had occurred.

It’s the third major recall from Toyota in the past few weeks.
