Teen worries take the edge off Facebook

Worries over Facebook’s ability to keep teenagers hooked overshadowed strong results from the social media giant today, with the company admitting it had seen a drop in the number of young teens using its website.

Overall users continued to expand, including in Europe, where the number of daily active users climbed to 188 million in the three months to September. Advertising revenues in the period jumped 66% to $1.8 billion (£1.1 billion) against last year.

Chief financial officer David Ebersman said that usage among US teenagers was stable. But the admission of an overall decline sparked concerns about Facebook’s ability to sustain advertising revenues.
