Quarto beating the bookshops decline

Quarto, publisher of how-to-do and coffee-table books, said it beat expectations in the first half with a 6% rise in operating profits to £3.9 million.

Executive chairman Laurence Orbach described this as a good achievement in a world where bookshops are declining and e-books taking a growing share of the fiction market. Sales were up 1% to £73.2 million in the six months to end-June.
