News in brief: Crisis may return, Putin warns G20, Mackay back in the chair at SABMiller, Google £1bn HQ given thumbs-up

Russian president Vladimir Putin today warned world leaders that they should not rule out a return to economic crisis.

He told the G20 summit: “Our main task is returning the global economy towards steady and balanced growth. This task has unfortunately not been resolved. Systemic risks, the conditions for an acute crisis relapse, persist.” The meeting also agreed international measures to tighten up on tax avoidance.

Mackay back in the chair at SABMiller

SABMiller chairman Graham Mackay has returned to work after recovering from surgery he had to remove a brain tumour in April.

John Manser, who was acting chairman during his absence, has gone back to being deputy chairman. MacKay’s illness caused the brewer to speed up the handover from him to Alan Clark as chief executive earlier this year.

Google £1bn HQ given thumbs-up

Internet giant Google’s planned 920,000-square-foot head office in King’s Cross has won unanimous approval from Camden Council.

The estimated £1 billion building will house more than 5000 staff and there will be around 16 shops at ground level. Developer Argent has submitted the proposal as part of a plan to revamp 67 acres in the area. Google employs around 1500 in the UK at present.
