Apple’s unprecedented double iPhone launch in San Francisco this evening is expected to reveal the handsets that will become the biggest sellers in the firm’s history.

Boss Tim Cook is set to unveil two new phones at Apple’s Cupertino headquarters — a high-end iPhone 5S with a built in fingerprint scanner, and a low cost 5C with a colourful plastic back.

The firm is also launching an entirely new version of its iPad and iPhone software called iOS 7, the first overseen by Londoner Sir Jonathan Ive. They are also believed to be planning a major push into China with rumours of a deal with Chinese firms expected to boost sales amid increased competition from Samsung.

“The potential for Apple to sell thousands if not millions of new iPhones is huge of it gets the positioning of the new phones right,” said Stuart Miles of gadget website Pocket Lint.

The firm has refused to officially confirm any of the rumours, although several leaks show the new handsets, which are expected to go on sale on September 27.
